Job Summary
Purpose: Lead the Product Engineering group by planning, directing, and participating in its functions. Concentrate on the current product line, including: specification maintenance, product design improvements, product approval, customer technical support, special applications, product education, and shop floor information. Incorporate new products into departmental responsibilities after initial commercialization by Product Development group.
Dimensions: Lead activities of department, including prioritizing projects for department staff among competing deadlines, different manufacturing plants, and multiple product lines and brands.
Responsibilities/Principal Duties

Incorporate new products into departmental responsibilities after initial commercialization by Product Development group.
Dimensions: Lead activities of department, including prioritizing projects for department staff among competing deadlines, different manufacturing plants, and multiple product lines and brands.
Responsibilities/Principal Duties
- Lead activities of Product Engineering. Specifically product modifications, product improvements, cost reductions, specifications, product rationalizations, instructions and labeling, legal assistance, code compliance and agency approvals (including wind load). Direct knowledge of customer and consumer requirements attained through periodic customer and site visits. (Essential)
- Direct workload amongst staff with an eye toward maximum benefit versus time spent. Motivate and guide staff toward final completion of multiple projects. Communicate project priorities so department staff will know what is expected of them. (Essential)
- Implement product changes and specification changes in a timely manner in conjunction with other functional areas throughout Clopay. Troubleshoot production problems directly related to engineering specifications and bills of material. (Essential)
- Communicate product specifications and product changes to internal customers and help in communications to external customers. Use the Engineering Change Order procedure as the primary tool in accomplishing this task. Participate in marketing product reviews. (Essential)
- Train and educate various internal and external customers on product offerings and product specifications. Internal customers include production, marketing, purchasing, quality and sales. External customers include customers, consumers, and regulatory agencies (governmental, legal). (Essential)
- Responsible for developing product cost and capital expenditure data as required. Also responsible for contributing to and adhering to department budget and expenditures of all personnel assigned. (Essential)
- Travel as required to customers, manufacturing, vendors, and company representation to assist sales/marketing, project development, and legal. (Essential)
- Monitor the progress of department staff on assigned projects: informally on a minimum weekly basis, and formally on a monthly basis.
- Supervision Received: Limited supervision required.
- Supervision Given: Product Engineers: limited supervision; Engineering Associates: moderate supervision; Engineering Co-ops: extensive supervision.
- Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Master of Business Administration preferred. Professional Engineering (P.E.) license highly recommended.
- Experience: Senior Engineer or Engineering Manager with a minimum of ten years’ experience in the building products industry (door experience a plus), with exposure to various types of manufacturing processes. Heavily involved in product design and specifications. Have customer relations experience and good communication skills.
- Equipment: Must be able to use common computer packages, including CAD, spreadsheet, word processing, and capital expenditure programs.
